Let's Lift the Curfew – This Girl Can
Challenging the winter 'curfew' that limits women's freedom to be active after dark.
Launched in 2023 by Sport England’s This Girl Can initiative, Let’s Lift the Curfew is a national campaign addressing the safety concerns that prevent women from being active outdoors during the darker months. Through community runs, public awareness, and advocacy, the campaign calls for systemic change to ensure women can move freely and safely year-round.
What you should know:
The goal of the campaign is to end the self-imposed 'curfew' many women adopt in winter due to safety fears, and to advocate for safer, more inclusive public spaces for physical activity. To do so, they highlighted five key action areas: cultural awareness, reporting frameworks, data sharing, inclusive urban design, and community collaboration.
They organized over 100 community runs across the UK, including a flagship UV-lit run in Manchester, to symbolize reclaiming the streets after dark.
They hosted a parliamentary roundtable with MPs and experts to discuss women's safety in public spaces.
The campaign has brought national attention to the issue of women's safety during darker months, fostering community engagement and prompting discussions at governmental levels.
