Own The Night: A campaign to champion women’s running safety across Wales

Own The Night, or Ein Nos Ni in Welsh, is a nationwide campaign in Wales led by Welsh Athletics, the national organization for the sport, to champion women’s running safety. It launched in 2025 in effort to make running safer for women, especially during the darker winter months when many women change or limit their activity due to safety concerns. The campaign also encourages clubs and runners across Wales to unite, including organized group runs when the clocks go back.

What you should know:

  • The campaign cites research by the UK’s This Girl Can, showing that winter darkness significantly affects women’s running habits: 72% of women in the UK change their activity during winter, with 24% sticking to well-lit routes, 23% avoiding certain areas entirely, and 20% regularly checking behind them.

  • The four stated aims of the campaign are: (1) Raise awareness of women’s safety concerns when running at night or early mornings; (2) Empower women to continue running through the winter months with confidence; (3) Educate running communities and the wider public on allyship and practical ways to support women; (4) Reclaim the streets by encouraging groups and clubs across Wales to host a group run on the day the clocks go back.
