Outrun the Patriarchy: A feminist running movement
Outrun the Patriarchy is a feminist movement within the running world.
Outrun The Patriarchy is a feminist running movement founded by different running crews and communities in Berlin as a response to harassment, exclusion, and discrimination of female, queer & BIPoC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) runners. Its mission is to raise awareness, create space for change, and demand better.
What you should know:
The initiative organizes visible, community-based runs that center solidarity over speed. These runs bring together women and marginalized people to collectively occupy public space, demonstrating what it looks like when streets and parks are filled with confident runners. Through social media campaigns and storytelling, participants share their experiences of harassment, resilience, and joy.
Outrun the Patriarchy developed the WhistleRunner, an anonymous reporting platform that allows runners to document sexualized violence and discrimination. Designed to listen to voices that are often silenced or dismissed, the tool creates a space where experiences can be shared safely and collectively acknowledged. By gathering stories, WhistleRunner not only validates lived realities but also builds evidence to advocate for safer, more inclusive running environments.
While Outrun the Patriarchy is currently based in Berlin, the movement encourages runners from around the world to share their experiences and help identify partners in other cities. Every story submitted contributes to raising awareness, strengthening solidarity, and driving structural change.
