Free to Move: A legacy in motion

Free to Move is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization established in memory of Alyssa Lokits, a 34 year old woman tragically killed in October 2024 while running in Nashville, Tennessee.

What you should know:

  • Focused on creating safety initiatives, educational programs, and community projects that prioritize women's safety during physical activities and empower women to lead active lives.

  • In response to Alyssa's death, advocated and secured local safety improvements, such as the installation of security cameras along Nashville's greenways.

  • Launched its first major event, the Free to Move: 5K Run for Alyssa in Nashville on International Women’s Day 2025. The 5K was part of a full week of programming, including a women’s safety event in collaboration with Vanderbilt University’s Women’s Center.

  • Now developing a comprehensive safety curriculum focused on both preventative and responsive strategies, including digital content, safety tool demos, and self-defense training.
