Safer London for All: Women-Led Safety Audits for Inclusive Public Spaces
Empowering communities to transform public spaces with women-led safety audits.
Safer London for All is an initiative led by We Made That, commissioned by Transport for London (TfL) and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC). It delivers a methodology and toolkit for Women’s Safety Audits, enabling women, girls, and gender-diverse people to assess and improve safety in public spaces. By centering lived experience and community research, this project is directly shaping safer environments, crucial for female runners who face heightened risks in urban areas.
What you should know:
The toolkit's purpose is to put women and gender-diverse people at the heart of urban safety, ensuring their experiences inform public space design and policy, and to equip communities with practical tools to drive change.
The pilot engaged 47 community researchers and reached over 150 participants, capturing a diverse range of voices and experiences. The resulting toolkit is now publicly available, enabling replication across London and beyond. Insights from the audits are already informing TfL’s design guidance and local safety initiatives, with the aim of making running and other outdoor activities safer and more accessible for women.
Safer London for All’s initiative is relevant to female running safety as they tackle safety issues by equipping women and communities to identify safety concerns and push for concrete changes.
